Effects of a Breast Feeding Support Program on Exclusive Breast Feeding in a General Hospital

Abstract

|
Purpose: This research was aimed to investigate the effect of breast feeding support program on exclusive breast feeding in a general hospital. Methods: The study design was a nonequivalent control group post test only design. Results: The scores for breast feeding attitude, skill and adaptation of the experimental group were higher than those of the control group at week 4. Exclusive breast feeding sustaining rate of the experimental group were also higher than those of the control group: 73.1% in the experimental group and 30.8% in the control group at week 4. Conclusion: The study provide the evidence that raising positive attitude and skill for exclusive breast feeding helps them to achieve successful breast feeding by themselves. In addition mothers need to be supported to breast feed starting before delivery and continuing after delivery. This approach could make long term exclusive breast feeding successful.
